About Michael Lambe
I am a teacher and writer, originally from Middlesbrough, in the U.K. I moved to Japan in 1997 and over the last ten years I have lived, worked and (sometimes) studied in Fukushima, Saitama, Tokyo and Kyoto. I moved to Kyoto three years ago for the simple reason that I love it. Currently I work in a big pink high school nestled in the green hills of Higashiyama, where I teach mainly English, but also some basic manners and common sense (with mixed results for the latter). This job is part-time, but well paid so I have a lot of time to indulge myself in my key interests: eating good food, drinking tasty beverages, listening to good tunes and having a grand old chat. I like to practice speaking Japanese as much as possible so I tend to go where other foreigners are less likely to be… And this is why I have access to and knowledge of the “Deep Kyoto” that many other foreign visitors may sadly never see. If you are interested in venturing a little deeper into the Japanese community, then I’d like to share that knowledge with you.
About Deep Kyoto
Deep Kyoto is a website for foreign residents and tourists, introducing those good places and people that make up the modern city. The primary focus of the blog is on cafes, bars and restaurants of character. However, any other information I consider beneficial for long and short-term visitors will also be included. All reviews are of places I personally have visited and taken a shine to, and include opening hours, plenty of photographs, and super clear directions so you don’t get lost. Please note that many places recommended on this website are not found in your average travel guide, and may require you to dust off your phrasebook and practice some basic Japanese. Deep Kyoto is also my excuse to venture deeper into the Japanese community, and to learn still more about this city and its people. To that end, if you have any recommendations for me, please send them here: firstname.lastname@example.org. However, remember that if I don’t like it, I don’t review it. Life is just too short.
