Going veggie to save the earth?

Go to BBC Learning English, listen to the report, listen again if you don’t understand, read the script if necessary, and come back.

So, what is the report about?

What do you think?

A: So, what is the report about?
B: It’s about a vegetarian day. A city in Belgium has decided that they will have a “veggie day” once a week in order to cut greenhouse gas emissions. People don’t eat meat on that day.
A: What do you think?
B: It sounds odd because the idea of skipping meat for environmental reasons is completely new to me. People usually go vegetarian for health reasons or they feel killing animals is cruel.
I don’t quite understand what they mean by “livestock is responsible for nearly a fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions.” Farm animals, such as cows and pigs, breathe and emit carbon dioxide (CO2), and that accounts for 20 per cent of global greenhouse gases? And if we eat less meat, we will need fewer farm animals and so we can reduce CO2 emissions? I’m not sure if it works in that way.
Anyway, it is humans, not cows and pigs, that cause environmental damage most. If we are serious about protecting the environment, we have to reduce human population. We are worried that population is declining in Japan. Perhaps that’s bad for the economy, but environmentally speaking, that’s good. In fact, economic expansion is the main cause of environmental destruction. If there were fewer people, fewer cars, fewer aeroplanes, fewer factories, fewer power plants and fewer economic activities, greenhouse gas emissions would be lower and the earth would be cleaner.
