Go to BBC Learning English, listen to the report several times until you understand, read the script if necessary, and come back.

So, what is the report about?

What do you think?

A: So, what is the report about?
B: It’s about English vocabulary. A company in Texas claims that the number of English words is about to reach one million. But the number depends how you define a new words. If you include technical terms, there are already more than one million words in English. If you exclude them, the vocabulary size is about 750,000.
A: What do you think?
B: It is interesting that we don’t know the exact number of English words. There are a lot for sure, and that makes learning English difficult. But we don’t need to know all of them. If you learn a few thousand, you can get by in English.
The report mentioned “1.5 billion people speaking some version of the language.” I’m wondering how they define “speaking English”. Learning English for six years doesn’t mean you can speak the language.
